Betting generated R$ 9.95 billion in federal taxes last year. With the ban, how much revenue will the federal government lose?

The Ministry of Finance estimates R$ 5.1 billion in 2027, just over half of that amount. The calculation is based on the premise that the money previously spent on betting platforms will shift to other sectors and continue to generate Corporate Income Tax (IRPJ) and Social Contribution on Net Income (CSLL).

In an article in the newspaper O Globo, Daniel Loria, a partner at Loria Advogados, discusses this logic and considers some possible destinations for bettors’ funds: illegal websites, consumption of other legal goods and services, and/or debt reduction.
